Essential Info About Muay Thai

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. It is a combat sport that is often referred to by experts as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” as its movements make use of kicks, punches, and knee and elbow strikes, thereby using all eight points of contact. This makes it a sport that is both challenging and unique, and the best practitioners use the best gear and equipment, such as a high-quality Muay Thai Punching Bag. The gear and equipment for the sport boasts a history as interesting as the activity itself. The following are some intriguing facts about early Muay Thai gear and equipment.

The Tiger King

A Thailand ruler known as the Tiger King had considerable influence on MMA fighting styles, as well as the protective gear worn by fighters in the 1700s. His influence in many facets of the sport is still seen today.

Throughout the Tiger King’s reign, those who participated in the sport bound their forearms and hands with strips of horsehair for the purpose of protecting the fighter and inflicting more damage on his adversary. Later, hemp ropes replaced the horse hair, but were eventually discontinued and replaced by the traditional boxing gloves seen today.

Until the 1930s, fighters were also required to wear groin guards, as groin kicks were a legal move within the sport until 1932. During the reign of the Tiger King, such guards were made from tree bark that was held in place with cloth. In some areas of the country, groin guards were also made from certain types of seashells.

Modern Gear

Specially designed kicking pads are usually worn during practice sessions. In past centuries such padding was made from virtually anything that was available, but in today’s modern world MMA pads are specially manufactured for this challenging combat sport.

Headgear is also used, which protects fighters from head injuries and bruises to the face. Interestingly enough, this type of protection was virtually overlooked throughout the earlier centuries, as fighters were not keen on wearing any type of equipment that could potentially interfere with their vision. Modern technology solved this problem by making protective gear that in no way detracts from the participant’s awareness and coordination.

Not surprisingly, gloves are a basic part of the sport’s gear in which virtually every participant must invest. There are several types of gloves, including those that are made with injection foam or C3 foam technology. High-quality gloves should always be used in order to lessen the impact on fists and to protect fighters from wrist sprain.

Many MMA participants also use additional protective gear, such as shin guards or body armor shields. Although each fighter’s objective when searching for such gear will vary, one’s focus should always be on quality when making a selection.

Muay Thai and MMA Workout Equipment

Kicking or Punching Bags are an essential item for participants, and help to keep fighters in optimum physical condition. Throughout history, such bags were filled with dirt, sand, rubber-like plant matter or even wet cloth in order to simulate the resistance one would experience when encountering another fighter.

However, today’s modern MMA enthusiasts seek bags that don’t contain sand, as sand can result in hollow spots or inconsistent texture that is not conducive to a quality workout routine. Certain companies even offer to create a customized Muay Thai Punching Bag based on the participant’s specifications.

Medicine balls, weighted jump ropes and wrist weights are also used by those who are serious about the sport, as these items help to keep fighters in top condition for competitions. As advancements in modern technology are made, the perfecting of MMA gear will continue, adding to the already long and interesting history of the sport and the equipment with which it is associated.

Muay Thai vs. Other Martial Arts

Muay Thai is a martial art that originated from Thailand and has been around since the 19TH century. Although it is not a mainstream martial art, it is definitely worth your time since it differs quite a lot from other martial arts. One of the most prominent characteristic of Muay Thai is that it employs kicks, punches, elbow strikes, and knee strikes by use of eight points of contact unlike other martial arts. Here is what you need to know about Muay Thai and other martial arts.

Karate Vs Muay Thai

Muay Thai does not use kata or point sparring like Karate. This means that one will only get experience through full contact sparring and maybe heavy bag work. This is a good thing because kata can be technical and may be hard to apply in real life. In Karate, you aim first before kicking or punching but in Muay Thai you focus first on power. Attacks from karate are faster but attacks from Muay Thai are more powerful

Taekwondo Vs Muay Thai

Taekwondo mainly employs powerful kicks as the main attack. The main goal of Taekwondo is to knock out your opponent as fast as possible because these kicks may leave the practitioner worn out. Muay Thai employs all attacks from punches to kicks and thus the practitioner develops a lot of stamina and is durable for any situation. It is true that the attacks from a Taekwondo martial artist are more powerful than those by a Muay Thai practitioner. However, the intense practice will leave a Muay Thai practitioner quite tough and durable.

Kung Fu Vs Muay Thai

Kung Fu is one of the oldest types of martial arts while Muay Thai has been around only for 600 years. Just like Karate, Kung Fu focuses on forms while Muay Thai focuses on sparring. This makes Muay Thai superior because it gets you ready for a real challenge. Muay Thai practitioners also learn faster because they practice will real people. Muay Thai however does not have intense meditation like in Kung Fu. It is fight now, think later.

Capoeira Vs Muay Thai

Capoeira is famous for its unconventional and unpredictable attacks. Capoeira employs powerful kicks but Muay Thai can also employ equally powerful kicks. Capoeira is effective when handling opponents who are close and players mainly defend themselves by employing an evasive maneuver. Muay Thai is significantly better than Capoeira.

Krav Maga Vs Muay Thai

Krav Maga was developed in Israel and it is known for its lethal nature and brutal counter-attacks. One of the best things about Krav Maga is that there are no rules. Muay Thai employs better teaching methods and trains on resistance. Krav Maga may be however superior because it is usually trained to the Israelite army.

Boxing Vs Muay Thai

Muay Thai and Boxing share some similarities but they are quite different. Muay Thai includes some elements of Boxing. These two martial arts can actually be very useful together. It is however a bad idea to use Muay Thai in a boxing match. The main difference between the two martial arts is the stances and hand positions.

The History of Muay Thai

Before Muay Thai was a competitive sport, it was purely a form of self-defense. The history of this self-defense discipline goes all the way back to the Thailands earliest history. In a time when the country was repeatedly attacked by other conquering nations, Thailands people had no choice but to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to defend themselves from their enemies.

In those days, the Thai people did not have much to work with in the way of weaponry. During a battle, all they had to use were spears and clubs items that could only be used at very short range. Because of this, the Thai people were forced to rely on their abilities and instincts to protect their country from invasion by neighboring countries.

Fighting methods developed by the Thais involved using the hands, fists, elbows, feet and head as weapons in close-range fighting. As the fighting methods were systematized, the discipline came to be known as Muay Thai. In western parts of the world, it is referred to as Thai boxing.

The Beginning of Muay Thai Fighting

In the early days of Muay Thai, fighters used their bare fists to fight. Grappling techniques were rarely or never used. Instead, practitioners would move in close to their opponent to attempt a strike and then move quickly back out of range to escape being struck by their opponent. Size and weight classes were unheard of in the early days of competitive Muay Thai. Practitioners would spar and often move on to their next bout without so much as a break or time out to rest.

If there were rules, there were not many. For example, it was okay to use the head to strike an opponent, and it was also okay to strike the groin area when fighting. The area was not considered off-limits at the time. Eventually, as the discipline developed matches were divided up into fighting rounds.

The Elements of Muay Thai

The essential elements of Muay Thai consist of striking techniques using the fists, knees, elbow and feet. Today grappling techniques are sometimes employed as a method of defense during a match.

Blocking is an integral part of the martial arts discipline of Muay Thai. Practitioners must be effective blockers to win a match, and to block actually; opponents must maintain excellent mental and physical conditioning.

Muay Thai Today

Today Muay Thai is famous all over the world, not just in Thailand. It is becoming a widely recognized competitive sport as more and more people learn self-defense through the methods of Muay Thai. Students of Muay Thai can be found everywhere. They are young and old, male and female, and they come from every background and every walk of life. Whether they train using a martial arts DVD or the begin their studies in the classroom, they are learning the methods that were employed years ago by the people of Thailand.

Influence and Evolution of Muay Thai

When it comes to the fashionableness of Muay Thai today, it is certain how it has become one of the keys of Mixed Martial Arts. Mixed Martial Arts has been recognized to link different martial arts and those fighters that can best fold in their Muay Thai have a distinct preference. Nowadays, it is a sport that systematically presents the use of stand up techniques of boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Muay Thai has been supported by great UFC champions. Of course, a lot of Muay Thai purists don’t agree since it dilutes their art. But others have embraced Muay Thai’s new found popularity and have embraced MMA fighters wanting to learn and represent such a useful art.

muaythai

What is Muay Thai? Understanding the basic rules and technique

Muay Thai is one of the oldest combat sports in the world. The combat sport that originated in Thailand is one of the oldest martial arts and is a common sport in many countries of the world. So, what is Muay Thai? To begin with, Muay Thai is a full-combat sport that is popular for using stand-up striking techniques together with other clinching techniques. However, the “art of 8 limbs” is not only physical but also mental discipline and includes combat directed on shins. It is known as the art of 8 limbs due to the combination of elbows, fists, knees, and shins. It is associated with proper physical preparations intended to make a full-contact combatant very efficient. The martial art is characterized by different rules which are not associated with other combat sports.

Rules of the sport

Some of the most basic Muay Thai rules include the number of rounds that combatants should be involved in during the sport. Normally, the sport involves 5 rounds with each round taking 3 minutes which should be followed by 2-minute rest period before the resumption of the next round. Combatants should not fight for more than 5 rounds. In addition, all the boxers participating in the sport are supposed to wear gloves which should not be squeezed, crushed or kneaded to change the original shape. Muay Thai contestants are also supposed to wear trunks only which should appropriately be fitting for their bodies. Boxers are also supposed to wear sturdy athletic cups or standard supporters for the protection of their gum and groin. No shoes or shirts should be worn during the sport but one can wear ankle cap. Shields are also allowed and can be used.

How to defend against attacks

There are 6 categories of defense when it comes to Muay Thai. Boxers are required to learn these valuable skills as they help during the sport and in real life. These include: –

Blocking – This defense category is always regarded as the defender’s hard block whose aim is to stop the opponent’s strikes before they reach their target. There are different blocks including shin block

Redirecting – Redirection is the soft parries of the defender and its purpose is to change the opponent’s strike direction. This can be in form of downwards tap to a jab and the goal is to ensure that the opponent doesn’t find his or her target.

Evasion – Evasion is meant to help the boxers defend themselves by moving their bodies out of strike range or out of the way thus ensuring that the attack doesn’t hit its target. This creates room for them to move closer for easier counter-attacks.

Avoidance – The difference between evasion and avoidance is that although both involve getting out of range or way of a strike, the latter allows the defender to remain with range for effective counter attack. This might call for the defender to move his front leg backwards when the attacker directs a low kick towards them before counter-attacking using an angle kick.

Anticipation – This defense technique allows the defender to counter or catch a strike before in hits its target. It involves techniques such as catching the attacker’s angle kick next to the body among other things.

Disruption: – This helps pre-empt an attack using disruptive techniques such as low angle kick, teep, or jab while the attacker is trying to close the distance.

Although it is combative martial art, Muay Thai is normally safe when practiced according to the set rules. Participants should be trained by a professional before taking to the ring.
